September 2025 update

9th Braid GWC Scout Troop

As of September 2025, we have around 50 young people regularly taking part in Beavers, Cubs and Scouts at the 9th.

After a six-year hiatus, we reopened our Scout Troop in early September 2025, with 10 young people joining initially. We plan to grow the Troop through a combination of further recruitment via the School and local community, Scouts transferring from District waiting lists, and Cubs moving up to Scouts in January 2026 and April 2026.

We have been able to expand our volunteer team, with four new leaders joining over the summer. Parents also provide help on a rota basis at meetings as needed.

Following the temporary closure of the Group from December 2022 – June 2024, the Volunteer team and Trustees are delighted to see it back up and running with support from Parents, the School and District. We have three sections operating again, and plans for further growth.

Recent Activity

This term Beavers have been concentrating on the Experiments badge, Cubs on the Scientist badge and Scouts on the Camper badge, with activities including slime-making, egg-pickling and tent-pitching, alongside wide games held outside. We are planning a hike and overnight camp for Cubs on 1 November at Bonaly, alongside other District groups.

On 12 September we ran a successful AGM attended by Trustees, parents, representatives from District, and the Lead Volunteer for South East Scotland, Martin Elliot. At the AGM, Ben James, Jamie Cavaye and Chris Small were recognised with Commendation Awards for their work restarting the 9th Braid GWC Group over the past year. Our Lead Volunteer Greig Torpey was given a Merit Award at the District AGM in June.

Duke of Edinburgh Link

We currently have four young leaders, ranging from S3 to S6, helping on Friday evenings across the three sections as part of the DoE programme.
